Dental laminates

Dental laminates are thin layers of porcelain, also known as veneers, that are applied to the surface of teeth. They can change the colour, shape and size of teeth without damaging the natural enamel. These laminates are usually 0.3 to 0.7 millimetres thick and are similar in hardness to eggshells or fingernails. When using other types of veneers, such as zirconium or metal, it may be necessary to reduce the teeth by about 1-1.5 millimetres around the edges to achieve a better fit. However, too much reduction can lead to problems such as weakened teeth and tooth decay in the long term. Laminate veneers, on the other hand, make only minimal adjustments, preserving the natural tooth structure. As a result, they are as durable as the underlying teeth.

Isn't it fascinating how such a thin material can completely change the appearance of an entire mouth? Laminate veneers, also known as veneers, are often used to improve the aesthetic appearance and change the colour of front teeth.

Typically, the teeth that make up our smile extend down to the second premolars. Laminate veneers can be used to change the shape and appearance of these teeth to make them more attractive. Laminate veneers are more suitable for the upper and lower 8-10 teeth. They can be an excellent choice for dealing with problems such as gaps between teeth or to enhance a more confident and attractive smile. However, if the teeth have extensive fillings or decay, laminate veneers may not be suitable and veneer crowns may be used instead to achieve a beautiful smile.

How are laminates made?
Before proceeding with laminate veneers, it is important to listen to the patient's wishes and preferences. Decisions about colour, shape and design are made together with the patient and transferred to a computer programme using special software. The design is then created digitally. To assess how the laminate veneers will fit in the patient's mouth, a model of the teeth is made using a 3D printer. Photographs are used to evaluate the fit and appearance of the laminate veneers in the mouth. The next step is to cut and measure the laminate veneers, and the final products are sent to the technician. Once the technician's work is complete, the laminate veneers are tried on the patient and then bonded to the teeth.

When should you consider laminate veneers?
If you are unhappy with the shape of your teeth, have misaligned teeth or want to improve your smile quickly, laminate veneers may be a suitable solution. Despite their thinness, laminate veneers provide strength and function to the underlying teeth once they are bonded. Because the tooth structure is minimally affected during the procedure, the overall damage to the teeth is reduced compared to other types of dental restoration, resulting in longer-lasting and healthier teeth. Because of these advantages, the demand for laminate veneers is growing. Patients often prioritise maintaining the health of their teeth and are looking for long-lasting solutions. Laminate veneers meet these needs, allowing patients to show off their unique smile and feel more confident in their daily lives.
